What are the main reasons that entrepreneurs don't succeed at business and take the necessary actions to reach their goals?
In life and business, the vast majority of us aren't reaching the goals and achieving the life we set out to have. A lot of research has been done on this, and I share some stats with you in this episode.
But don't be discouraged. I'll also tell you how you can fix this for yourself and give you a quick-start strategy to start shifting towards progress, success, and building more of what you do want . . . and less of what you don't want.

How SBL Got Its Name
When I first started coaching and teaching years ago, I was frustrated with how much information there was out there that wasn't really founded on sound advice or principles that worked.
I decided early on that I would take the time to learn the true facts and the best practices in fields like neuroscience, psychology, human behavior, and business and marketing. And that's how the concept of "The Smart Better Life" was born.
It's "Smart" because my belief is that you don't need (or want) watered down fluff. You're already a smart and savvy listener and consumer. So I wanted to bring you the methods, tools, and strategies that are science and evidence-based approaches that will actually get you results.
It's "Better" because there is a better way and better tools that most of us have not been taught. Most of our education and cultural conditioning has been devoid of training on how to be self aware, manage our minds, get along with others, and set goals that we actually achieve. I want to share that knowledge with you so that you can have a Better life.
You might be wondering why I called this The Smart Better "Life" podcast if I talk so much about business. It's my belief that being an entrepreneur and having your own business can be one of the most fulfilling ways to have autonomy and create more potential in your life. I think this is especially true for women and marginalized communities who might not be given jobs and opportunities in a traditional 9-5 that fit with their desired income and lifestyle.
In addition, I don't think we can (or should) separate our work life from our personal life. The goal should be to create a Life, with a capital L, where all parts of your life come together to create a full experience that you really love.
Who This Podcast Is For
This podcast was created for digital entrepreneurs. You are a coach, course or membership creator, or anyone who wants to start or grow a part-time or full-time business in the knowledge industry . . . coaching, teaching, or leading others.
This podcast is for also anyone who wants to learn how to navigate the challenges of life and business. The tools I share will work for anyone who wants better relationships, more income, less stress and overwhelm, and to be more in alignment with their dreams and goals.
Why Self-Leadership Is the Most Important Thing You Can Learn
The number one most important thing you can do to have success in life and business is to master your internal world. It's all about self leadership.
This begins with managing and mastering our minds. Our minds define how we see ourselves, what our self identity is, and what we believe is possible for us. Most of us have a lot of limiting beliefs about what we can achieve. And a lot of us can't even see the deeply rooted beliefs and subconscious thoughts that are running the program . . . and running our lives.
What Holds Us Back
Here are the main reasons why people fall short in life and business, in relationships, and getting what they really want:
- self sabotage
- chronic worry or rumination
- self criticism
- lack of self worth
- imposter syndrome
- lack of planning
- inability to set and achieve goals
Here are some stats that may surprise you:
- Only 19% of people who set a New Year's goal actually achieve it two years later (University of Scranton)
- 82% of people want to write a book, but only 1% ever actually publish
- Most people struggle to lose even 10 or 20 pounds and keep it off
- Only 5-15% of people actually finish online courses that they buy (ResearchGate)
- Roughly three in five Americans have had an idea for starting a business, but 92% didn't follow through with turning their ideas into reality (Zapier-commissioned Harris Poll survey)
Our Brains Are Not Wired for Success
Our brains are wired for survival first, above everything else. Because of this, our brains are looking for everything out there in the environment that is perceived as a threat.
The brain has thousands of thoughts per day. The studies vary on the number of thoughts that we have, but the key point is that the vast majority of those--75 to 85 percent--are negative. That doesn't mean that you're a negative person or something's wrong with our brains. It's just because your brain is wired to keep you safe and alive.
But playing safe is the opposite of how we need to think to be a great entrepreneur. This explains why we show up like we do as human beings, and why we don't always get the success that we want.
Who I Am
I'm a former Fortune 500 salesperson with a strong background in business and science. I'm a geeky nerd-researcher on all things psychology, neuroscience, and human behavior, and I'm crazy about online marketing and business.
I've been trained or certified in multiple different programs on topics like coaching, neuroscience, online marketing, and business. In fact, I've spent almost the equivalent of an Ivy League education–well over six figures–learning everything I can so I can be an expert for you. I'm now bringing this unique package of skills, expertise and knowledge to you.
After struggling for years and not being able to get out of my own way, I wanted to find the answers and solutions to create my Life By Design, not default. I've gone on to live in a place where I love my emotional world–the thoughts that I have and how I feel. Now I spend my days creating from a place of big possibilities.
After I created results in my own life, I then started sharing and coaching with students from all around the world. And they started getting great results, too.

Your Quick-Start Strategy To Move Towards Success
Your Automatic Negative Thoughts, ANT's, are running a program in your brain all the time. Over time, many of these turn into deeply-rooted beliefs in your subconscious.
Here's how to start "de-programming" or directing your brain towards the thoughts you want.
1)When you notice a negative thought come up during your day, stop and just let yourself become fully aware of it. Then get curious about why your brain might be offering up that thought or idea.
The thought could sound like, "I don't know where to start" or "I can't do this".
Write it down so that you see it.
2)Then ask yourself, "Is that 100% true?" (Hint: Most ANT's aren't.)
3)Explore it, and then ask yourself, "What if I could choose to think something different?"
4)You can then generate a list of new thoughts instead of just accepting whatever your brain is offering up. Write those down, too.
5)See how those new thoughts make you feel. When you shift how you feel, you open yourself up to other possibilities and solutions. This gives the other parts of your brain (like the pre-frontal cortex) the opportunity to generate ideas about the actions you can take from a new and different thought and feeling.
